DONAR FIBA EUROCUP / EN NU (DUS NIET) BC OOSTENDE: BCO Wint de Beker van Belgie / FIBA.COM / SPORZA /

Dat zagen we even niet aankomen; dat Donar de volgende ronde van de Fiba EuroCup zou halen lag in de lijn van de verwachtingen, maar dat BC Oostende -al jarenlang oppermachtig in België- de volgende ronde tegen Donar NIET zou halen een stuk minder. Door mijn jarenlange samenwerking met Rob Meurs, die consultant was bij BCO, dat ook gebruik maakte van onze Scouting, was ik jarenlang op de hooigte van veel 'Ins&Outs' bij die club, en kwam ik er ook een keer of 3, 4 per jaar. Na de dood van Meurs, kwam ik er nog maar enkele keren, ook al bleef ik ze op flinke afstand altijd wel een beetje volgen. De aanstaande strijd om een plek in de Final-4 van de EuroCup tussen de Groningers en de West-Vlamingen, zou een mooie gelegenheid zijn geweest weer eens naar de Belgische Kust af te reizen en me wat meer te verdiepen in het team met het oog op een te maken Preview. Dat gaat dus niet gebeuren; de Belgen vlogen eruit in Montenegro.

Zou dat te maken hebben met de Winst van de Beker van België, waar BCO weer won, maar pas in OT tegen Mons? We zullen het nooit weten. Het onderstaande artikel stond al klaar met het oog op die te schrijven Preview...

Oostende celebrate Belgian Cup triumph after edging Belfius Mons-Hainaut in overtime

FOREST (FIBA Europe Cup) - Still undefeated on the home front this season, Belgian powerhouse Oostende extended their dominance by going all the way in the Belgian Cup for the sixth time in a row.
Dario Gjergja's side needed to put in some extra work, but ultimately earned an 84-80 victory against Belfius Mons-Hainaut despite the Final going into overtime.

Dusan Djordjevic and Jean Salumu were the team's only players in double figures with 18 points each, with team captain Djordjevic also adding a side dish of 5 assists.

Vladimir Mihailovic and Mike Myers collected 9 points apiece, while Marko Jagodic-Kuridza chipped in with 8 points and a team-high 6 rebounds.
"The key moment in the game came in the third quarter, when we had a 14-point advantage. We had the opportunity to kill the game, but we started making careless turnovers that allowed Mons to believe in themselves again," Oostende playcaller Gjergja spoke after the game.
"But I also want to emphasize that Mons delivered a phenomenal performance."
In a losing effort for Mons-Hainaut, Garlon Green led the charge with 17 points, Christopher Jones had 13 points, with Tre Demps chipping in with 12 points and a game-high 6 assists.
It was the 18th Belgian Cup triumph in Oostende's history.
"Some people said we would not go to the Finals this season and, yet, look what we have accomplished. We want to build a winning culture and improve our players. Just look at the evolution of a player like Jean Salumu," Gjergja said.

After achieving one of the main season goals, Oostende can now shift some of their focus to the FIBA Europe Cup, where a return fixture against Mornar Bar awaits in the Round of 16.
The Belgian side won the first leg of the tie 84-71 in Ostend and will travel to Montenegro to face their opponents away from home on Wednesday.
