Over Karl Anthony Towns en Jahlil Okafor heeft iedere Basketball-Junk in Nederland inmiddels wel een mening - of tenminste een idee - deze twee spelers zijn immers regelmatig op onze Nederlandse TV - bedankt Sport1! - te zien geweest. En ze werden ook gedurende maanden - of meer - gigantisch gehypt, dus voor een echt basketballdier was er bijna geen ontkomen aan. Daarnaast zijn er nog wel wat namen die door de NCAA-competitie bekend zijn geworden en 'ins' dus ook niet volkomen blanco laten.
Maar in elk NBA-proces zijn er er weer een paar namen die ons nog weinig zeggen, om de doodeenvoudige reden dat we ze niet hebben gezien - ze nauwelijks KONDEN zien -.
Dit jaar is Emmanuel Mudiay een van de grootste onbekenden voor de Amerikaanse Media, en dus duikt iedereen in de Media (en ik vermoed ook veel fans) er boven op. Hoe dat proces kan gaan heb ik van dichtbij kunnen zien toen mijn vriend en scoutingspartner Rob Meurs nog leefde. Ik herinner me dat hij me belde in de middag voor de Draft-avond, en vertelde dat een club met de Nummer-2 Draft Pick hem belde - en dat was dus terwijl Rob 'Officieel Internationaal Scout' was voor een hele andere club!-, zij wilden weten wat hij van zo'n onbekende Internationale Speler vond. Wij wisten wel iets van die jongen, maar het was niet veel - en dat betekende dat zowat niemand er iets van af wist, anders hadden we het waarschijnlijk wel geweten...ik weet het, het klinkt arrogant, maar zo was het wel... - Wat we wel wisten was niet zo positief, deze jongen was echt geen Hoge Pick waard. Het was dan ook verbijsterend om diezelfde naam die avond toch doodleuk als tweede uit de hoge hoed te zien komen. Van die jongen hebben maar weinigen daarna nog iets vernomen, ik heb hem nog weleens gezien; hij werd door zijn agent in Europa langs allerlei clubs gestuurd, in de hoop op een baantje...of dat nog ergens gelukt is, zover gaat mijn kennis/herinnering niet...in ieder geval niet daar waar ik hem - op proef - zag spelen...
Maar dat zoiets Emmanuel Mudiay zal overkomen is niet waarschijnlijk, die jongen kan echt wel spelen. Nu is het de vraag hoe hoog hij uiteindelijk 'gepakt' zal worden. En dan natuurlijk: wanneer wij liefhebbers hem voor het eerst significant speeltijd zullen zien krijgen - in de NBA waarschijnlijk, maar anders wellicht nog even in Europa -...
Wie weet, de komende weken nog een paar andere Niet-Amerikaanse potentieel hoge Draft-Picks...

Emmanuel Mudiay: The NBA Draft's mystery man is a top-6 pick

This much we know about Emanuel Mudiay: He has the talent to be a top-six NBA Draft pick, and there would be plenty of surprise if he lasted longer than that on draft night. One league source told Sporting News, “There’s no way he’d get past the Kings.” And since Sacramento holds the sixth pick, that is a pretty comfortable backstop for Mudiay’s draft stock.
Of course, Mudiay probably will go higher. He’s been among those mentioned as a potential No. 1 pick this year, though the guard-heavy Timberwolves are expected to go big with the top choice. After that, the Lakers, Sixers and Knicks picking second, third and fourth will be in the Mudiay mix.
The issue is that no one can quite say what sort of player Mudiay might be in the NBA. In terms of his game, he draws comparisons to John Wall and Derrick Rose — the kind of defense-collapsing, hard-driving point guard that has risen to the fore in the modern NBA.
But Mudiay could also be compared to Jazz point guard Dante Exum and Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings. Both of those guys entered the NBA draft from the international ranks, with a slim volume of professional work behind them and a stock sheet littered with question marks.
Exum didn’t play for a year in Australia before being drafted fourth by the Jazz in 2014, and Jennings skipped out on Arizona to play professionally in Italy for a season before going 10th to the Bucks in 2009.
“That’s the issue with [Mudiay],” one NBA scout told Sporting News. “He is a tough guy to judge. There are some teams you hear that love him. But there are so many questions, and he can’t answer them. So it’s tough to say where that leaves him. Huge risk.”
Mudiay skipped out on college basketball this year after he was ruled ineligible to play for SMU, and he instead signed a $1.2 million deal in China. He injured his ankle in December, after playing in only a handful of games. Teams that went to China to scout Mudiay came back less than impressed. But rather than pack up and return to the USA, Mudiay stuck it out and returned to play for his Chinese team (Guangdong) in the playoffs. He scored 24 points in his return.
Mudiay earned respect and kudos of league executives for his maturity and professionalism in dealing with his injury. But what he didn’t earn was rave review for his play — he only played 12 games last season.
“He is a special player, a combo guard who is 6-5 and can play the point,” NBA senior director of scouting Ryan Blake told Sporting News. “He has that wiry strength, the craftiness and the handles, he has a great motor. He is mature for his age.
“When he hurt his ankle in China last December, he really showed the maturity in sticking it out and staying over there. He could have been a Dante Exum who, basically, they shut him down. As good an athlete as Exum is, never played against great competition consistently before getting to the NBA, and lost a lot of development by not playing. He was just working out. I like what Mudiay did where he stuck it out, he stayed there, he got healthy and he came back and played in the Chinese playoffs, and played well.”
But there is not much that can be deduced from the similar paths to the NBA that Mudiay, Jennings and Exum took. Jennings arrived with a jaw-dropping level of play for a rookie, signaling future stardom, but did not do much to improve his game after his first year. Exum is on the opposite path—the Jazz have been very slow and deliberate with their approach to his development.
How Mudiay should be developed will be a matter for after the draft. In the meantime, teams are still scrambling to find out how good he is and what he might project to be. He remains the draft’s biggest unknown.
“He is a high-risk, high-reward situation,” Blake said, “because you just haven’t seen him a lot.”
