They first met in the NBA finals in 1959. The most recent time they faced off with it all on the line was 2010. 12 times in all for the NBA’s best rivalry, 5 times a Game 7 was needed to decide the series- The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. East Coast/ West Coast. Russell and Chamberlain, Showtime vs The Big 3, Bird vs Magic, The New Big 3 vs Kobe. Red Auerbach, Pat Riley. The distinctive legendary voices Chick Hearn and Johnny Most calling the action. No other franchises in the NBA compare to the Celtics and their 17 championships and the Lakers and their 16. Michael Jordan and the Bulls dynasty is given credit for elevating the NBA’s popularity to never before seen heights, but it was Bird and Magic front and center in the 80’s saving the NBA - when attendance and interest was minimal. The NBA finals on tape delay. Bird and Magic met in the NBA finals 3 times - won 8 titles combined in the 80’s while the NBA rose dramatically in popularity and has never looked back. The rivalry could get a new boost now -with LeBron James in LA - while Boston competes for the top of the Eastern conference once again led by former LeBron teammate Kyrie Irving. The names are legendary and go on and on -- Havlichek, Worthy, Kareem, Shaq, DJ, Sam Jones, Mchale, Cousy, Jerry West. Netflix komt met een documentaire over Michael Jordan. In de jaren tachtig was ik geabonneerd op een videoservice. Elke week kreeg ik uit Duitsland VHS-banden met wedstrijden uit de NBA. Behalve honderden competitiewedstrijden heb ik álle play-offs tussen de Celtics en de Lakers gezien. In de historie van de sport heeft zich nooit een rivaliteit op hoger niveau afgespeeld. Fox zond een fantastische ESPN-documentaire uit over die periode. Ik kon er alleen maar met betraande ogen naar kijken. Quote van Johnson: "Als Bird en McHale nu zouden besluiten het groen-wit aan te trekken, haatte ik ze weer. Dan zat ik hier niet te glimlachen, because I hate the Celtics." Lakerscoach Riley: "Ik ben 71 jaar en nog altijd heb ik er moeite mee te praten met Bird en Ainge."

Jordan mag de superster zijn geworden, Bird en Magic waren de basketballers.

Aan ieder tijdperk komt een einde, en als dat dan een beetje geleidelijk gaat is dat misschien wel de beste -meest elegante- manier. Nu is het een van de 'Grootste NBA Legendes Ooit', een van zijn bijnamen luidt zelf 'Legend', Larry Bird, die het zelf tijd vindt om na een carrière van zo'n 50 jaar langzaam afscheid te gaan nemen van 'Hands-on' bezig zijn met zijn sport. Hij doet een flinke stap terug bij de club die hij het langste diende, en waar hij zich -naar eigen zeggen- het langst en het meest mee verbonden voelde; de Indiana Pacers van Indianapolis. Dit ondanks het feit dat hij natuurlijk publiek het meest wordt geassocieerd met de Boston Celtics, waar hij als speler de grootste triomfen vierde. In Indiana was hij zeer succesvol als coach, maar ook als Manager.

Larry Bird Steps Down as Pacers President, Will Remain as Consultant

NBA legend Larry Bird officially stepped down from his role as president of the Indiana Pacers on Monday, though he will stay with the franchise as an advisor. Kevin Pritchard will take charge of basketball operations for the franchise.

"I felt it was time to step away in a full-time capacity," said Bird. "This has nothing to do with my health or our team. I'm 60 years old and I want to do other things away from basketball. I will do some scouting for the Pacers, NBA, college, international, do some appearances and stay in a capacity to advise senior basketball management. I love the Pacers, I grew up with the Pacers and admired them from a very young age. I want to thank the fans for their support throughout my career. I also want to thank (owner) Herb Simon for the many years of loyalty and for allowing me to stay with the team in a different role."

Adrian Wojnarowski‏ of The Vertical first reported the organizational changes on April 28.

How Bird's decision will impact the outlook for star forward Paul George, who has one guaranteed year left on his current contract, is the key question.

The 60-year-old executive, who earned 12 All-Star appearances and won three NBA titles during his illustrious playing career, made it clear he had no intention to trade George despite intense speculation leading up to the trade deadline, per Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times.

"I wasn't motivated to move Paul George at the deadline," Bird said. "I can't remember if it was even brought up or not. I don't think it was. It's all fake news anyway. You know that. Somebody's gonna start it and [it] just was a snowball effect."

Yet the Pacers will be playing a dangerous game if they advance through the offseason and next season's deadline without an extension or trade in place.

Mitch Lawrence of Sporting News reported this week George, who grew up in California, eventually wants to play for the Los Angeles Lakers and "never made his long-term intentions a secret" during conversations within the Pacers locker room.

I was not expecting Larry Bird to step down this season. Wow. Paul George's likelihood of being a part of the #Pacers just went down IMO.

One thing's for sure: Bird's hasty exit after the Pacers got swept in the first round of the playoffs by the reigning champion Cleveland Cavaliers will only amplify talk about George's future this summer.

The former Boston Celtics superstar started his second stint as Pacers president in June 2013. Indiana made the playoffs three times in four years after Bird's one-year hiatus but advanced beyond the first round just once. The Indiana native also served as the team's head coach from 1997 through 2000, posting a 147-67 record and leading the team to the 2000 NBA Finals.

Pritchard joined the Pacers in 2011 as the team's director of player personnel. He got promoted to general manager in 2012 and will now oversee basketball operations.
