LESSEN VOOR JEUGDIG TALENT / COLUMNIST BASKETBALL AART DEKKER / TOEKOMST / NCAA / WISCONSIN / SI FANSIDED: Het Belang van Goed Free Throws Schieten (voor Jeugdige Talenten)!

Een van de Ameri-kaanse NCAA (Assistent) Coaches waar ik een hele goede relatie mee heb is Gary Close -
vroeger Stanford, en Iowa university (waarmee hij de NCAA Final Four Mens Basketball haalde als Assistent van de Legendarische Dr. Tom Davis) en nu al heel lang assistant, c.q. Shooting Specialist/Guru Coach, bij Wisconsin, tot voor kort dus assistant van de al even Legedarische Coach Bo Ryan, vorig jaar Finalist tegen Duke aan het slot van March Madness. Eerlijk gezegd snap ik niet dat deze man niet al heel lang Head Coach is bij een hele goede Universiteit - want ik zou er heel wat geld op zetten dat hij bij de juiste school ook heel succesvol zou zijn...

Waarom deze inleiding? Omdat Gary Close dus geldt als een echte Jump Schot Specialist als Coach - er zijn dan ook vele, vele vroegere of huidige NBA-sterren die (pas) echt hebben leren schieten onder leiding van Close. Zomaar twee namen: BJ Armstrong - de fluweelzacht schietende Guard van de Chicago Bulls in hun eerste Glorietijd - en Frank 'the Tank' Kaminski - die vorig jaar gloreerde als een All Round Big Man met een Super Driepunter als extra wapen. Gary Close was is ook de producer van vele instructional Tapes/DVD's coor coaches en/of spelers, waaronder vele die gaan over 'Hoe een goede Schutter te worden?'

Dan nu naar de moraal van dit verhaal. Iedereen met een beetje verstand van Basketball zal onderschrijven dat het raak schieten van Vrije Worpen/Free Throws een belangrijke 'Skill' is. Iedere speler die 'Aan de Lijn kan komen' - dus in staat is om Persoonlijke Fouten te trekken bij zijn Verdedigers - is al waardevol voor een team (en coach), maar dat geldt natuurlijk des te meer als die Vrije Worpen dan ook tegen een hoog percentage benut kunnen worden.

Een belangrijke Les dus voor iedere Jonge Speler met Talent!

Een 'Skill' bovendien, die tot in aanzienlijke mate - zelf - Trainbaar is. Aanzienlijke mate, omdat de 'Hack a Shaq Tactiek' natuurlijk nooit zou zijn ontstaan - en tegenwoordig in veelvoud zou worden hergebruikt op bijvoorbeeld DeAndre Jordan, Andre Uagodala (e.v.a.) als het 'Trainbare' aspect ervan voor iedereen zou opgaan; ik zou graag een percentage krijgen van het geld dat alleen al aan het trachten Shaquille O'Neal deze kunst bij te brengen is uitgegeven..!

In ieder geval is het wel veilig te stellen dat voor de meeste - getalenteerde - spelers wel op gaat dat het schieten van Free Throws wel tot in aanzienlijke mate te trainen is, dat dat bovendien individueel - dus door de speler zelf, zonder (veel) begeleiding van coaches - kan gebeuren; het is voor de meeste spelers gewoon een kwestie van er arbeid in stoppen, eindeloos vrije worpen schieten, jezelf disciplineren/checken, net zolang tot je het kunstje beheerst, en dat dan vervolgens bijhouden.

Dan worden het weliswaar geen 'Gratis Punten', maar wel de eerste punten die je de meeste wedstrijden alvast in potlood kan noteren...

Ambitieuze Jeugdige Getalenteerde Spelers weten dus wat hen te doen staat: vraag advies aan je Coach, leg een schriftje - of je telefoon - klaar, ga aan het werk, en noteer je inspanningen en resultaten! En dan - die kans is tenminste heel groot - ben je duizenden, tienduizenden of nog meer verder, 'een Speler' waar tegen het niet loont om fouten tegen te maken, en kan je een zeker aantal punten per wedstrijd incalculeren voor de meeste wedstrijden...

Nog even terug naar Wisconsis; dit team raakte gedurende zomer van 2015 een flink aantal flink aantal 'Sterren en Vaste Waarden' kwijt - waaronder Frank Kaminski en Sam Dekker (ook al een hele goede Schutter!), en misschien nog enkele anderen - aan de NBA, en vervolgens na een periode van ' Gaat'ie wel of gaat'ie niet ' uiteindelijk pas al tijdens het Reguliere Seizoen 2015-2016 ook Coach Bo Ryan; er moesten dus veel nieuwe/onervaren spelers worden ingepast, en men moest wennen aan een nieuwe Headcoach. Dat kostte het team een behoorlijk aantal winstpartijen. Maar de laatste weken gaat het beter en beter. Waarom? Onder andere door het feilloos schieten van Free Throws...de Lezer snapt natuurlijk wel welke Coach daarachter zit!?!

The Wisconsin basketball team is getting it done from the charity stripe

In the Wisconsin Badgers’ 82-79 overtime home win over Indiana on Tuesday night, the Badgers made 28 of 37 free throws, and Nigel Hayes made 17 of 22 foul shots, including 11 straight in the final 4 minutes, 43 seconds and overtime. Getting to the free-throw line more often has been huge in Wisconsin’s recent streak.

Wisconsin found itself on the losing end of three consecutive games after a 70-65 road defeat to Northwestern on Jan. 12 to put the team at 1-4 in the Big Ten and 9-9 overall, which was the latest the Badgers have been at .500 since the 1997-98 season – the last time they were left out of the NCAA tournament.

Since then, Wisconsin basketball has reversed the course and won three in a row. The biggest change with the recent turnaround: free throws. The Badgers have gotten to the line more often in their last three games than they have in any previous game this season. With wins over Michigan State, Penn State and Indiana, Wisconsin has attempted 36, 35 and 37 free throws, respectively.

The reason for the increased free-throw shooting has been the way the Badgers have attacked the basket. When Wisconsin plays around the perimeter shooting deep jumpers, it is doing the opposing defense a favor. Instead, playing more aggressively and getting in the lane has increased opponent fouls. Wisconsin has drawn 28, 29 and 31 fouls in its last three games, which puts the Badgers into the bonus early.

Hayes does the most damage at the line. He ranks eighth nationally in free-throw attempts (170) and 14th in free-throw makes (126). Hayes is No. 1 in both categories among Big Ten players. Without a developed jump shot, Ethan Happdoes all of his scoring in the paint, which racks up a lot of fouls as well. The more aggressive Happ is in the post, the more free throws Wisconsin will attempt. The Badgers’ offense is at their best when Happ is assertive because as we have seen, he has the moves to score against future NBA talent.

Making more free throws than opponents attempt became a staple of Wisconsin basketball under Bo Ryan. With Ryan as the head coach, the Badgers made more free throws than their opponents attempted in half of his 14 full seasons with Wisconsin. It would take a lot for the Badgers to accomplish this in the 2015-16 season under interim head coach Greg Gard, but with the way the last three games have gone, it is possible. Wisconsin has made 335 foul shots, while opponents have attempted 387.

When Wisconsin has attempted more free throws than its opponent, the Badgers have a 10-3 record. When Wisconsin has gotten to the foul line less, the Badgers are 2-6. Given the fact that Wisconsin has lost seven games by six points or less, free throws could have made the difference like it did in the five games the Badgers have won by six points or less.

In a two-point loss to Western Illinois and a one-point loss to UW-Milwaukee, Wisconsin missed nine free throws in each game and missed seven in a one-point loss to Indiana. The Badgers shot just four free throws in a two-point loss to Marquette, eight in a six-point loss to Purdue, 11 in a three-point loss to Maryland and 13 in a five-point loss to Northwestern.

Free throws could have easily made the difference in each of these close losses. If Wisconsin could have gotten to the line more, the Badgers would likely have a much better NCAA tournament resume that includes a 12-9 overall record with some bad home losses.

Wisconsin has an uphill battle to make its 17th consecutive tournament appearance, and for the Badgers to continue their winning ways, they will have to get it done at the free-throw line.

March Madness - NCAA - Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky wint Oscar Robertson Trophy

Het is jammer dat er zelfs over deze soort zaken tegenwoordig controverses ontstaan, maar Frank 'The Tank' - wie heeft die bijnaam eigenlijk bedacht, want hij past zo NIET bij deze finesse-speler... - is mijns inziens terecht verkozen tot 'Speler van het Jaar' in het NCAA Mens Basketball Seizoen 2014-2015. Waarom? Omdat hij - alles bij elkaar genomen - gewoon de Beste was; zeker niet de meest getalenteerde speler, ook niet de meest atletische, maar wel de meest ontwikkelde van de teams in de Final-4, de belangrijkste speler de laatste twee jaar in het meest constante team over die twee jaar, bracht zijn team heel ver - tot op enkele momenten van de Finale vorige seizoen, en zeer dichtbij het Kampioenschap dit seizoen. En verder is het ook goed dat een Senior met deze kwaliteiten gekozen wordt, iedereen die het Basketball - en de meeste getalenteerde potentiële Supersterren - een goed hart toedraagt, vindt toch dat het beter zou zijn als de huidige 'One and Done' zou worden uitgebreid tot minimaal een 'Two and Done'!? Kaminsky had vorig jaar al hoog in de NBA-Draft kunnen gaan, maar koos - vooral uit sentimentele redenen - om zijn studie en college-basketball-carrière af te maken met het grootste deel van zijn teamgenoten van vorig jaar. Dat had heel slecht uit kunnen pakken - financieel, en misschien ook wel wat betreft carrière in de NBA -; daar zijn voorbeelden van... Maar nu lijkt het eens goed uit te pakken; het zij hem - meer dan((!) - gegund...

Wordt Kaminsky een absolute NBA-Superster?
Dat staat nog te bezien. Dat zal afhangen van bij welke ploeg hij terecht komt, wat zijn rol daar wordt, en - misschien wel het belangrijkste van alles - hoe zijn lichaam zich houdt en verder ontwikkelt tijdens de komende moordende NBA-seizoenen...

Maar in ieder geval heeft zijn keuze - vooralsnog - niet slecht uitgepakt; het heeft hem niet het vurig gewenste NCAA-Kampioenschap gebracht, wel individuele prijzen, en nog mooier seizoen dan het vorige - dat ook al niet verkeerd was - en het door hem gehoopte - dat zei hij tenminste vorig jaar om deze tijd van het jaar - nog een extra fantastisch jaar op de door hem geliefde Campus van Wisconsin University, en met de teamgenoten en staf waarmee hij het zo naar zijn zin had. En dat pakt niemand hem meer af..!

Wisconsin forward Frank Kaminsky has been selected as the winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy. The trophy is presented each year to the National Player of the Year as selected by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Over 37 games this season, Kaminsky has averaged 18.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 54.9 percent from the field. The 7-foot senior helped the Badgers notch a program-record 35 wins, and Big Ten regular season and tournament championships. On Saturday, Wisconsin will face Kentucky in its second consecutive Final Four. "This is obviously a great award and I am honored to receive it," Kaminsky said. "I have to thank my family, who have really helped me grow as a person and grow as a basketball player. I'm just so honored to receive this award." The 74 years in between NCAA Championship game appearances is the longest such stretch in men’s tournament history.

It’s been a while since the Wisconsin Badgers won a national championship. In fact, the last time the Badgers were on top of the college basketball world, a guy by the name of Ted Williams was chasing a .400 batting average for Boston.
Unlike the Red Sox that season in 1941, the Badgers did claim a championship. That was a full 74 years in the past though, which makes it the longest span in between two title game appearances in NCAA tournament history.
On Monday, coach Bo Ryan and company will attempt to capture the school’s first Division I basketball title in nearly three-quarters of a century. Looking to prevent history is perennial powerhouse Duke, led by the legendary Mike Krzyzewski. “Coach K” will be seeking his, as well as the entire program’s, fifth championship.



Think about how much history has passed in between now and the last time Wisconsin was vying for a NCAA basketball championship. World War II, the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf, Cold, and Iraq Wars.  America has  had 13 different presidents, dating back to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was in the middle of an unprecedented run as president at the time.
Major League Baseball has since been desegregated, the pitcher’s mound was lowered by a full six inches. Baseball has since had two new home run kings. The Super Bowl was born as a result of the AFL-NFL merger. There are plenty more examples of history related to sports, however, for the sake of time, we will just mention the following.
College basketball had yet to incorporate a three pointer, something that would not be available on a full time basis in the professional level either until the late 1960s. It was a much different time.
Just to give one final note of perspective on how long it has been since Madison has had a team competing for a title this late in the NCAA basketball season, two members of The Beatles had not even come into existence yet; Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
So, it’s been a while.

Wisconsin-Kentucky most-watched Final Four game in 19 years

A stellar Final Four game between Kentucky and Wisconsin on Saturday was the most watched semifinal game in 19 years.
Wisconsin and Kentucky set a record on Saturday, unfortunately for the Wildcats, it wasn’t the record of going 39-0. The game ended with generating the most television viewers ever before on a college basketball game according to the NCAA.
The average of 22.6 million total viewers per network created the largest audience ever for a college basketball game. And are you at all surprised?
The Kentucky Wildcats, the college basketball dream team, filled with stars like Karl-Anthony Towns, Willie Cauley-Stein, Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Trey Lyles, Devin Booker and more were 38-0 going into the national semi-final in hopes of becoming the first college basketball team to ever go 40-0 and win the championship.
The Wildcats, led by head coach John Calipari, were crushed when they let a slim late-game slip away and Wisconsin led by senior Frank Kaminsky and junior Sam Dekker took home the 71-64 win spoiling Kentucky’s perfect season.
It was as if it was written in a book. Big bad Kentucky who everyone other than their obscenely large fan base wants to go down and a fan favorite Wisconsin, storming in and dismantling Kentucky late in the second half much in thanks to a Sam Dekker three pointer followed by a charge call drawn by Dekker on Trey Lyles.
According to the NCAA, the combined viewership of the two national semi-final games was up 35 percent over last year and the NCAA Tournament as a whole has had a six percent increase over 2014’s NCAA Tournament.
Without Kentucky in the national championship, one has to wonder if the game will get less views than it would have if the Wildcats were in. Granted Duke and Wisconsin have huge fan bases and anyone who loves sports should and will be watching the game, but maybe Wildcats fans nationwide take the trend to not watch the game. We’ll see if ratings are effected negatively, or if the national championship proceeds to bring in the most viewers the Final Four has seen in 19 years.

Obama's strijdkreet mag dan wel luiden "There are no Red States in the USA, there are no Blue States; there's only the United States of America", dat zien de conservatieven anders... En aangezien Indiana zeker bij de meer conservatieve staten hoort, werd daar een wet aangenomen die nogal discriminerend is voor wie niet 'Wit, Hetro en Conservatief' is. Dat terwijl Basketball, en zeker de wereld van Universiteiten en Colleges - zeker in het Basketball - erg zijn best doet het tegendeel na te streven. Die twee werelden botsen tijdens de Final-4...zo werden er door veel mensen en instanties daden gesteld en/of verklaringen afgegeven, zo ook de vier Coaches van de Final-4 Mannen-teams (zie het bericht van Fansided.com hieronder).

The coaches of the Final Four teams issued a joint statement about the Indiana Religious Freedom Act

The state of Indiana has come under heavy fire recently for passing the Indiana Religious Freedom Act, which many argue makes it legal to discriminate, particularly against gays and lesbians, under the guise of protecting religious beliefs.

The NCAA itself has also issued a statement the law, saying in part that it is “concerned about how this legislation could affect our student-athletes and employees.”

Indianapolis is also hosting the Final Four, and the Final Four coaches, Tom Izzo, Mike Kryszewski, Bo Ryan, and John Calipari, have issued a joint statement on the new law.

The statement reads as follows:

“We are aware of the recent actions in Indiana and have made a point to talk about this sensitive and important issue among ourselves and with our teams. Each of us strongly supports the positions of the NCAA and our respective institutions on this matter – that discrimination of any kind should not be tolerated. As a part of America’s higher education system, college basketball plays an important role in diversity, equality, fairness and inclusion, and will continue to do so in the future.”

Despite the continued insistence of Indiana lawmakers, including governor Mike Pence, that the law is not intended to discriminate against anyone, the state is catching some serious heat for this.

Voorpret 'March Madness' Donderdag 26 Maart 2015: Preview Kraker Wisconsin vs. North Carolina

Iedereen heeft natuurlijk zo zijn voorkeuren bij het March Madness Spektakel - dat is een element dat die 3-4 weken in deze tijd van het jaar zo groot hebben gemaakt, en wat het zo leuk maakt -. Ik schreef eerder al meerdere malen over North Carolina en Duke, en de 'Rivalry' tussen beide scholen; veel groter en indrukwekkender dat dat kan je nauwelijks vinden in de sport. Dat zijn dus zeker twee scholen die ik graag zie winnen. Maar er is er nog een waar ik dat graag voor zie gebeuren, en vorig seizoen waren ze een haarbreedte van misschien wel het winnen van het hele spul; Wisconsin. En omdat ze er vorig jaar - na in grote delen van de wedstrijd, en zelfs in de laatste seconden, in gewonnen positie - er in de laatste seconden in de Halve Finale in de 'Final-4' toch nog uit vlogen, is mijn grote Favoriet voor 2015 dus Wisconsin.

Mijn redenen zijn niet alleen de sympathie vanwege de dramatische exit vorig jaar; ik vind de manier van spelen - mits op dreef - ook mooi 'Aanvallend Teambasketball Optima Forma' zeg maar, een soort San Antonio Spurs, maar dan op College-niveau. Daar komt nog bij dat ik een van de assistant coaches erg goed ken - en dat ik erg veel respect heb voor zijn kunnen en manier van werken -, en dat ook Bo Ryan me zeer aanspreekt. En - last but not least - dat er ene Sam Dekker - geen familie bij mijn weten - is dan ook nog een aardige bijkomstigheid. Ik denk dat deze Dekker de NBA zeker zal gaan halen, helaas zal hij niet elegible worden voor 'ons Oranje' omdat hij al voor Nationale Jeugd Teams van USA Basketball is uitgekomen.

Het zal geen verrassing zijn dat ik veel van wat er de laatste tijd over de Wisconsin Badgers te vinden was heb verslonden, al is het onbegonnen werk zelfs maar te proberen alles tot je te nemen...

Het mag dan ook geen verrassing zijn dat mijn stem voor College-Speler van het Jaar 2015 naar de Ster-Center Frank Kaminsky ging; niet omdat hij het grootste Talent is of de Grootste NBA-Carriere te gemoed kan zien - dat wordt mijns inziens Jahlil Okafor, 'Tim Duncan All Over Again' als je het mij vraagt(!) - maar wel omdat hij de meest ontwikkelde NCAA-speler van 2014-2015 is, en omdat het geen kwaad kan weer eens een Senior als Speler van het Jaar gekozen te zien worden!!
