Aan het begin van (de voorbereidingen op) het nieuwe NBA-seizoen sprak -zoals ieder jaar- de hoogste baas -Commisioner Adam Silver- uitgebreid over de stand van zaken in de NBA, en de ontwikkelingen van dit moment.
Hieronder in het kort (en in het Nederlands) waar hij het zo'n beetje over heeft gehad, daaronder een lLink naar de originele versie op de site van de NBA, en overgenomen de hele Post van NBA.com (en andere media).
Adam Silver had het o.a. over:
- Hij wil meer vrouwen op belangrijke posten in de diverse geledingen van de NBA...
- ...dit is mede het gevolg van een schandaal en daarop volgend onderzoek naar wangedrag jegens vrouwelijke medewerkers bij de Dallas Maverics
- Eigenaar Mark Cuban greep stevig in in de organisatie van de Maverics, moest de NBA $ 2.5M boete betalen, en stelde $ 10M beschikbaar om geleden schade te herstellen en ervoor te zorgen dat dit soort misstanden verleden tijd zullen zijn.
- Volgens Silver was er veel aandacht voor deze kwestie bij de eigenaren van de andere NBA Francises, en is hij ervan overtuigd dat de in Dallas ontwikkelde modellen en protocollen ook hun nut zullen bewijzen elders in de League. Maar vooral stelde hij:
- And the No. 1 recommendation? “You need women in the workplace,”
- Hij besprak de Spelregel-wijzigingen, waarbij het hete hangijzer -de 'Clear Parth-rule'- natuurlijk aan de orde kwam. De regel zal vooral eenvoudiger worden.
- De 24/14-seconden regel wordt aangepast in situaties van Offensive Rebounding, en enkele wat minder voorkomende situaties; de klok gaat vaker terug naar 14 seconden, waar dat nog 24 was.
- De regel 'Hostile Acts' wordt uitgebreid, en zal niet alleen meer van toepassing zijn bij acties tussen spelers jegens elkaar, maar ook tussen spelers en andere betrokkenen -bijvoorbeeld coaches en scheidsrechters- en die anderen jegens elkaar.
- Tenslotte besteedde Silver aandacht aan de -(steeds) vaker voorkomende situatie waarin spelers Trades forceren terwijl ze nog doorlopende contracten hebben, met soms grote gevolgen voor de clubs in kwestie. Hij denkt dat de Collective Bargaining Agreement(CAO) tussen clubs en spelers op dit punt aangepast moet worden, maar verwacht dat dit niet eenvoudig zal blijken te zijn, noch dat een aanpassing dit probleem helemaal op kan lossen.

Commissioner Adam Silver addresses workplace misconduct, rules changes, looming free agency
Commissioner Adam Silver sent a memo to teams urging them to hire more women in leadership roles.
NEW YORK -- As agendas go, the one tackled by the NBA’s Board of Governors Thursday and Friday wasn’t the sort that would make headlines. A few rule changes all but rubber-stamped after prior consideration, some reports on the international game and on revenue sharing, an update on sports betting, and other business-as-usual items.
But coming as it did in the immediate wake of the league’s mandates on the Dallas Mavericks and owner Mark Cuban after an independent investigation into that team’s workplace culture, there were a lot of governors from the other 29 teams paying close and serious attention.
“In that room, it was a sobering moment for everyone there,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in discussing the findings from allegations that surfaced in a Sports Illustrated article last February. “I think there's a lot of introspection now … saying, can something like this happen in my workplace? Whether it's the NBA or any other businesses they operate, what are the best practices preventing those things going forward? I can only say, we will redouble our efforts at the league and working with our teams to try to ensure that the kind of events that happened at the Mavericks never happen again.”
Silver, speaking with reporters after the conclusion of the Board’s two-day fall sessions, cited the Mavericks’ transparency in cooperating with the investigation into the oppressive work environment that persisted for years under former CEO Terdema Ussery.
He also talked of the limited precedents in assessing penalties in such a case, particularly on Cuban or the Dallas basketball operation. The incidents described or corroborated by 215 witnesses were limited to the franchise’s business operation, according to the investigation, and Cuban was found not to have committed or even to have known about them. None of the 215 people interviewed informed him directly.
Silver factored that into decision, one that has drawn criticism from some media outlets as being too lenient. As part of the resolution, Cuban agreed to donate $10 million to women’s organizations, including those focused on women in the sports industry and on domestic abuse. Had Silver simply imposed a fine on the Mavericks owner, the league’s by-laws limit the amount to $2.5 million.
“I don't know what dollar amount could possibly compensate employees over a long period of time for that type of misconduct,” Silver said. “While I couldn't compel him to pay [the $10 million donation], I went to him and thought, under the circumstances, that would be an appropriate number.”
The Mavericks also have been compelled to institute several reforms in their workplace, including promoting or hiring women into senior management positions, establishing protocols for reporting misconduct and educating employees on proper conduct.
But what had Silver encouraged Friday was the sense that changes imposed on the Dallas franchise might serve as a model for what the league’s other teams might willingly adopt. A portion of the investigative report featured 13 recommendations specifically for the Mavericks. “But we at the league office thought it was so well done,” Silver said, “it clearly put in one place a set of rules that we think all workplaces should follow.”
And the No. 1 recommendation? “You need women in the workplace,” he said.
Three rule changes for 2018-19
Mercifully, Silver didn’t go into detail on the changes in adjudicating clear-path fouls, one of the league’s most vexing rules to call and, worse, review. It was the protracted video reviews by game officials of the labyrinthian rule and its extenuating circumstances that the change adopted Friday is intended to reduce, in both frequency and length.
The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved three rules changes ahead of the 2018-19 season.“The changes to the clear path foul rule establish ‘bright line’ standards based on the position of players at the time of the foul,” the NBA’s official release explained, “while also narrowing required referee judgment and reducing the number of variables impacting the rule’s application.”If you want chapter and verse, you can read more about clear-path definitions here.
The shot-clock reset change is far simpler. Rather than resetting to a full 24 seconds after an offensive rebound of a missed field goal or free throw that hit the rim, it will go to 14 seconds. Two other scenarios in which the clock will reset to 14 seconds: after a loose-ball foul called on the defensive team immediately after a missed shot or free throw, or when the offensive team takes possession of the ball after it immediately goes out of bounds following a missed shot or free throw.
The 14-second reset has been in effect in the NBA’s G League the past two seasons, in the WNBA since 2016 and in FIBA play since 2014-15. It was used on an experimental basis in the summer leagues this year.
Finally, for purposes of triggering replays, the league’s definition of “hostile act” was expanded. Now, beyond looking at player vs. player interaction, the referees can review encounters involving players with coaches, coaches with coaches, and either with referees or fans.
Not-quite-free agents?
The NBA long has been committed to freedom of movement by players between contracts. But over the past year or so, franchise stars such as Paul George in Indiana, Kawhi Leonard in San Antonio and most recently Jimmy Butler in Minnesota have pushed to move during contracts.
That leads to turmoil in markets that feel they’re being abandoned, and challenges to teams trying to enforce a contract for a player to stay or generate trade value when rivals know the star wants out. Butler, for example, reportedly wants to be dealt to the L.A. Clippers, the Knicks or the Nets rather than play his final season with the Timberwolves before hitting free agency next summer.
Silver was asked how the owners feel about such scenarios and if the league might have any involvement. “We're always trying to find the right balance in terms of right contract length, advantages of incumbent teams to keep [players] in those markets and keeping players focused on playing under their contracts,” he said. “I don't know if there's any scenario where these situations will go away completely.”
“It's never been a secret that -- in this sport in particular -- players have enormous leverage. But teams have leverage, too,” Silver said. “It's something that should be in everyone's interest, frankly, teams and players, for players to honor contracts. Because in a team sport an individual player's desire to leave that market has a huge impact on his teammates as well, many of whom have come to that market out of a desire to play with that player.”
The Timberwolves traded three promising young players -- Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen -- to Chicago in June 2017 for Butler, counting on his All-Star skills and experience to spark a return to the playoffs. That’s exactly what happened, but reports of Butler chafing with young stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, and his alleged unhappiness over the Wolves’ handling of a contract extension, have led to serious drama in the Twin Cities.
The Timberwolves are in a tough situation now that Jimmy Butler has requested a trade out of Minnesota.At this point, team owner Glen Taylor reportedly might step in to consider trade offers for Butler, intervening due to the tight relationship between the player and Wolves coach/president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau.
Regarding additional ways to aid a star’s current team -- such as enabling that club to offer the fatter, five-year extension sooner, rather than waiting till his free agency -- Silver noted the league’s collective bargaining agreement between the owners and players would need to be revised. “I'm not sure there are any easy fixes here,” the commissioner said. “This is a relationship business and that's something that's never going to change. Despite advances in analytics, scouting, technology, it's still a people business.”

Ik schreef het vaker: ik heb wat met de basketballer en de persoon Derrick Rose. Waarom en hoe en wat? Ik was voor Adidas -waarvoor ik toen scoutte- aanwezig bij de eerste editie 'Adidas Nations' in New Orleans. Buiten Top-Jeugd-Talenten uit ieder werelddeel, was er ook een groep met aankomende Collegespelers aanwezig. Overdag waren die mannen 'Tutors' voor de iets jongere spelers in het Event. In de avond hadden ze als groep enkele uren voor hun eigen ontwikkeling; het grootste deel van die tijd werd er in twee teams tegen elkaar gespeeld. Die -ik herinner me 23- mannen, vormden de beste groep Talent die ik ooit ergens buiten Topwedstrijden op de allerhoogste niveau's bij elkaar zag. Geen Collegeteam dat er maar ooit bij in de buurt kwam, geen Nationaal Team Jeugd dat ik ooit van dichtbij zag -en dat waren er honderden in tien jaar scouten en erover schrijven voor het Nederlandse publiek! Ik denk dat er NBA-wedstrijden zijn met minder talent op de vloer, en ook in het Internationale Basketball staat er vaak beduidend minder talent tegelijk op de vloer. En deze mannen waren 18-19 jaar, dat is goed om te benadrukken.
Wie waren er onder andere bij?
Derrick Rose stak er met kop en schouders bovenuit, vooral op basis van techniek en sublieme snelheid. Kevin Love was een van de beteren, net als een van de broers Lopez. Maar er waren er nog veel meer, waarvan een deel 'het gemaakt heeft' en een deel uiteindelijk stukken minder.
Ik had het voorrecht die mannen dagen achter elkaar van dichtbij gade te slaan; van ontbijt, via ochtendsessie, lunch, middagsessie, diner tot en met die specifieke avonden. En dan soms daarna nog in de wandelgangen en/of recreatieruimten.
En Rose intrigeerde mij het meest van al die Supertalenten van over de gehele planeet.
Ik dacht toen al: "Dat kan de Beste Speler Ooit worden!"
Hij schopte het binnen no-time in de NBA tot Francisespeler van de Chicago Bulls, tekende Megacontracten voor in totaal zo'n $ 2 a 300.000.000,- nadat hij tot jongste MVP ooit in de NBA werd gekozen... En toen ging het mis; vooral door een serie zeer zware blessures, maar ook door affaires buiten het veld, en 'minder dan briljante uitspraken' bij interviews.
Toch is hij nog steeds relatief jong. En iets diep in mij zegt me, dat al dat talent niet in rook opgegaan is, alhoewel dat best mogelijk zou kunnen zijn, daar zijn teveel voorbeelden van.
Als het er ergens ooit uit zou kunnen komen, dan lijkt me dat mogelijk bij de San Antonio Spurs, onder leiding van die uitstekende staf en management, met als boegbeeld Legende Greg 'Pop' Popovic. Dus wat mij betreft: "Ik kan niet wachten!"

Inside the lower Manhattan apartment of the notoriously taciturn Derrick Rose, there is a moment when he tells you exactly who he is. “I’m a true introvert,” says the 28-year-old point guard for the New York Knicks.
“I picked the profession I’m in, so there’s no way I could whine about it,” he says. “And I’m blessed enough to be in this position.”
But?
“I hate fame. It’s just not who I am.”
This summer, Rose becomes a free agent for the first time in his career. And it’s a moment to reckon with this fame and some of his complicated and troubling personal and professional topography. As a college freshman, Rose led his team to the NCAA finals but their wins were later vacated over allegations of wrongdoing, including that he cheated on the SAT. Jumping to the NBA, he was the league’s youngest MVP, seemingly destined to return his hometown Chicago Bulls to their former glory. But Rose spent entire seasons recovering from injuries that eclipsed his preternatural power and athleticism and caused many fans to lose heart. Season after season, he generates controversy–from premature quotes about free agency to accusations of rape.
Sitting across the dining room table, he asks you to consider that he’s simply not wired to change his game. Not wired to be more politic with the media, sell himself to fans or better explain the decisions behind the controversies that have followed him. That it is not in his DNA to meet people and give interviews that distill his essence to basketball writers and fans who, at bottom, believe that being complicated is an indulgence reserved for champions.
And in the saga of Derrick Rose, that’s one thing he still hopes to be.
“Winning takes care of everything,” he says.
Rose graduated from the violence-plagued Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side to the rarefied air of professional sports stardom and imagined that he could always let his game speak for itself.
But both on the court, and in the game of life, he’s sent mixed messages.
On April 2, the Knicks announced he had torn the meniscus in his left knee and three days later he underwent surgery. It was his fourth knee operation in five years. Now he faces free agency coming off rehab and there’s a real question of how he’s going to land.
When you ask him about the past several years, Rose is contemplative about the ground he’s covered, the move from Chicago to New York, and what it has taught him about himself.
“I feel like you need a break sometimes just to find out who you are. And I think my family and my friends, they understand that. I’m 28 years old. I hurt myself when I was 23. Twenty-three, that’s quite young to accomplish what I accomplished.”
He said he’s been figuring himself out and figuring out the world at the same time — as a man, a ballplayer, as a father.
When he was first injured in Chicago, he said, he shut everybody out. “I feel I was wrong,” Rose said. “I’m human. You try to go through these problems yourself,” but you need people to talk to, “even to vent to get things off your chest.” And not just friends and family. “And it took me actually going through it, and experiencing it to recognize what I was doing wrong.”
In The Return, a 2013 documentary Adidas produced to chronicle his initial comeback, Rose said that when he tore his ACL, “the whole time I’m in the MRI machine, I’m just praying, crying and stuff, hoping that it wasn’t tore. Think of your most downest day and times that by a hundred. That ain’t enough to describe how I felt at that time.”
“You drive yourself crazy trying to hold all that in,” he now says. “And there’s nothing wrong with talking to a professional.”
Rose was a shy kid, close to his mother, Brenda, an aide for the Chicago Board of Education, and three older brothers, Reggie, Dwayne and Allan, who kept their keenest eyes on young Derrick and helped groom him for basketball stardom. After winning back-to-back state championships at Chicago’s Simeon Career Academy, he led the Memphis Tigers to the NCAA championship game in 2008.

If Gar Forman and John Paxson are looking for a trade for Rajon Rondo, they might consider Ricky Rubio. Rubio may not figure much in Tom Thibodeau’s new system but the Spanish point guard is a match made in heaven for both Nikola Mirotic and Doug McDermott.
Matching player salaries as the easiest way of finding an equal or better deal for trading players. Rondo might bring the Bulls the one point guard who easily fits like a glove for Fred Hoiberg’s pace-and-space offense: Timberwolves’ point guard Ricky Rubio. Rondo’s salary for Chicago runs at $14 million while Rubio’s contract runs at $13 million. The difference can be made up by fodder players or even packaging Taj Gibson for Gorgui Dieng and Tyus Jones to make up the salary match.
Rubio has been languishing under Thibodeau’s slower system that relies on posting up Shabazz Muhammad and Dieng ( both of whom are face-the-basket players) and he is considered expendable by Thibs because of Kris Dunn and Jones performing slightly better on offense than Rubio. Thibs is slowing down the team and clogging the lane with his bigs. Hoiberg can use Rubio to be more surgical since the Bulls don’t really clog the lane like Thibs.
With Chicago, Rubio might actually flourish being an ex-teammate of Mirotic on the Spanish National basketball team. That alone should upgrade the game of the Bulls’ enigmatic scorer. Even Doug McDermott’s game will spike with Rubio on the team looking for him all the time. No more shooters sitting in the corner if Rubio plays for the Bulls.
Rubio has also outplayed Rondo in their first matchup this year, helping the young Wolves run the Bulls into the ground by finding seams in the defense and passing to the best scoring options.
Rondo may have worn out his welcome the instant he threw a towel at a Bulls assistant coach and Paxson was just looking for any indication that they don’t need to put up with a headcase like that. When the Bulls lost consecutive games with Rondo at the helm, being unable to defend stud scoring guards, that may have forced Chicago to decide to end the Rondo experiment and lean more on Michael Carter-Williams as starting point guard.The Bulls don’t need Rubio to score big. They need him to feed Mirotic and McDermott and bring the ball up speedily. If Rubio can help Nikola get four or more good looks from outside the arc, and Doug the same or more, he’s done his job. The Bulls can get their guard points from Dwyane Wade or Denzel Valentine. But they need someone to bring the ball quickly into the frontcourt and look for shooters or cutters.

Het lijkt erop dat de 'Zomer van 2016 in de NBA' de meest hectische, waanzinnige, verrassende en landschap-verander-ende ooit aan het worden is; een groot aantal verhuizingen van Supersterren, die ieder op zich weer de oorzaak zijn van deals met de spelers van het volgende echelon, die dan weer een kettingreactie op gang brengen van spelers van de rest van het spelersbestand.
Het zou best weleens kunnen dat de NBA 2016-2017 gespeeld wordt met veel teams die nauwelijks nog lijken op die van 2015-2016.
Er gebeurt zoveel dat het lastig is een beetje overzicht te houden, laat staan alle achterliggende artikelen te lezen.
Maar de volgende Tracker van 'nba.com' laat tenminste zien wie er nog op een contract wachten en welke deals al wel zijn gedaan: --- Hier ---
Beetje vermoeiend wel - het hieronder volgende 'debatje' tussen Stephen A. Smith en ... - Smith is een Knicksfan en vindt dat Knicks-GM Phil Jackson niet levert naar dat hij betaald wordt, er volgt een uitbarsting waarbij de mogelijke uitbarsting van de Hekla op IJsland 'peanuts' is...oh ja, dat 'zakje pinda's' speelt ook een rol in de 'discussie'... Benieuwd wat jullie ervan vinden - de move van Jackson en het onderstaande twistgesprek..!
Sinds ik Derrick Rose - nog voordat hij naar Memphis ging voor zijn enige jaar Collegebasketball - een klein weekje mocht van dichtbij mocht volgen, en zeker nadat hij binnen no-time de Jongste MVP Ooit van de NBA werd, intrigeert deze speler/persoon mij. Het maakte zelfs een serieuze Bulls-volger van mij...en wat het afgelopen seizoen steeds duidelijker werd - er zou 'iets gaan gebeuren met of Rose, of met Butler - is nu dan echt gebeurd; Chicago Bulls verhandelde zijn vaak geblesseerde Superster, en dan nog wel naar de NY Knicks van Phil Jackson... Nu moet ik dus niet alleen de Bulls blijven volgen, maar ook de Knicks gaan volgen - dat had ik niet zo maar bedacht..! De NBA wordt interessanter en interessanter; ik heb tijd te kort...

Waarschijnlijker alternatief: dat ik --naast duursporter (hardlopen, schaatsen, langlaufer, (berg-) wandelaar, en basketballer-- organisator, journalist, en/of cabaretier was geworden...
Ik ben een nogal idealistisch ingestelde persoon met een sociale inslag en probeer daar invulling aan te geven door mezelf in te zetten als vrijwilliger; iets doen voor anderen. Met een achtergrond die van jongs af aan het beoefenen van de prachtige sport Basketball omvatte, ligt het vrijwilliger zijn in het basketball natuurlijk voor de hand. Ik begon daar al jong mee, en ben daar tot de dag van vandaag (inmiddels al tientallen jaren). In al die jaren heb ik al van alles gedaan: vrijwilligersfuncties binnen Clubs, de Landelijke en Rayonale Bond, en heb daarnaast zelfstandig allerlei Toernooien, Wedstrijden en andere Activiteiten georganiseerd. Daarnaast schrijf ik ook over basketball in diverse Media. Tenslotte is mijn passie het vinden en helpen ontwikkelen van (Jeugdig Basketball-) Talent.

Ik kan er mijn emoties mee kanaliseren, gedachten door ordenen en (beter door) overbrengen op anderen. Het gaat dan vaak om Basketball (belangrijk in mijn leven), Politiek (zowel een grote ergernis als betrokkenheid voor mij), Muziek, Cabaret, Boeken en Film, en alles dat met mensen te maken heeft zijn ook hobby's en/of fascinaties van me.
Nevendoel van Aart's Blog
Ik ben van mening dat er vandaag de dag te weinig gelezen wordt; kranten, magazines en lange diepgravende artikelen op het Internet...
Alhoewel ik me er heel goed van bewust ben dan mijn Blog die ontwikkeling niet zal keren, wil ik via deze blog toch proberen om mijn lezers (iets) meer te laten lezen. Dus deel ik -behalve eigen teksten- ook stukjes/artikelen&posts van kranten(o.a. NRC, Trouw, Volkskrant), Magazines(o.a. SI, ESPN), en content van Sites en uit mijn 'Oude Doos met Knipsels'. Een beperkte selectie van wat ik de moeite waard vind.
In de hoop dat - al is het maar af en toe een enkel iemand - deze waardevolle Media ontdekt, doorklikt en - vroeger of later - ook zelf naar die media gaat om te lezen...l leest er maar een persoon per post, een(1) stukje meer dan hij/zij anders zou hebben gedaan, dan is mijn moeite niet verspild.

Jarenlang stopte ik mijn ziel en zaligheid in de Haagse Inner-City-Basketballvereniging Team Ten Dreamers The Hague. We hadden veel succes, en waren een bijzondere, 'Multiculti-club' (and proud about it!) met veel talentvolle jeugd.
Doordat de gemeente Den Haag toegezegde steun uiteindelijk niet nakwam waren we genoodzaakt onze activiteiten te stoppen. Maar TTD slaapt slechts; ooit komen we terug! Natuurlijk, het is spreken voor eigen parochie. Maar toch, ik kan in alle eerlijkheid zeggen dat ik de Vriendenloterij een leuke loterij vind. Waarom? Omdat ik steeds vaker iets win; mijn 'Winlog' vanaf November 2014:

Basketball speelt een belangrijke rol in mijn leven. Toen ik 14 was zag ik voor het eerst een wedstrijd. Ik zag balkunstenaar Jerome Freeman voor Frisol/Rowic tegen (ik meen) Jugglers spelen; mijn leven was veranderd.
Het duurde nog wel even voor ik lid werd van Frisol/R, toen was 15. Het is niet zo dat Basketball voor mij 'alles' was (of is). Het is wel een belangrijk onderdeel; ik werd 'Basketballer', en dat zal ik blijven voor de rest van mijn leven. Daarbij maakt het niet eens veel uit dat ik zelf niet meer kan spelen; ik was Speler en nu doe ik andere dingen in het Basketball.
Hoe het Nederlandse Basketball reilt en zeilt, telt dus voor mij; het houdt mij bezig en ik zou graag beter zien gaan. Dus wil ik daar mijn steentje aan bijdragen.
Het kan zijn door Kinnesinne, Frustratie, Sensatielust, Domme Onwetendheid, Profileringsdrang, Persoonlijke Aversie, enzovoort; er wordt in en rond het Nederlandse Basketball nogal eens met modder gegooid. Daar baal ik weleens van.
Basketball is een schitterende sport; met voetbal de grootste teamsport ter wereld, spectaculair en een mooie metafoor voor het 'gewone leven'; alles zit erin.
Alleen weten in Nederland slechts relatief weinig mensen dat, en dat is jammer, want de sport Basketball verdient een groter en belangrijker podium in de Nederlandse samenleving.
