Stemmen! (Voor de NBA All Star Game)

Ik kan het niet helpen: sinds ik ooit Indiana Pacer Lance Stephenson een aantal dagen van heel dichtbij moest volgen, ben ik geïntrigeerd door deze jongen. Een 'Freak Athlete', maar ook erg moeilijk om te bereiken - niet eenvoudig coachbaar -, dat was mijn eerste indruk. Dat beeld werd in de paar jaar daarna dubbel en dwars bevestigd. Ik moest dan ook nog zien dat hij in de NBA zou kunnen slagen, en toen hij door de Pacers werd gedraft, werden die vraagtekens alleen maar dikker. Hij speelde nauwelijks in Indiana, in zijn eerste jaren, maar het was ook duidelijk dat men van plan was geduld met hem te hebben! En misschien is die combinatie: ongelofelijk talent, weinig verwachtingen, een stabiele omgeving (bijna een familie), en veel geduld, (en natuurlijk doorzettingsvermogen van Lance Stephenson zelf!), die ervoor hebben gezorgd dat hij toch doorbreekt, want dat is wat er vanaf het begin van 2012-2013 aan het gebeuren is; Stephenson is een belangrijke speler voor een van de beste, zo niet het beste team in de NBA!

Right around the time the Indiana Pacers' locker room was clearing out, after the team's 116-92 win over the Sacramento Kings, rookie Solomon Hill, C.J. Watson and Paul George huddled around a smartphone. Laughter and looks of utter confusion filled their circle. There's only one in that room who could incite such a reaction.

On Tuesday, Stephenson released an All-Star campaign video that is sure to go viral. In it, Stephenson wears thick-brimmed glasses and a shaggy blond wig. He is "Sir Lancealot" and he wants you to vote Lance Stephenson as a first-time All-Star.

"Actually, shot that yesterday," said Stephenson, who held the production as his home. " Me and my cousin and Rasual (Butler) came up with the idea."

Stephenson taking his campaign to the people in a clever marketing pitch follows the approach from some previous All-Star wannabes. In 2008, Chris Bosh, then a Toronto Raptor, created this video. The same year when Dwight Howard wanted votes as the All-Star Slam Dunk champion, he appeared in this clip.

In his entertaining video, Stephenson goes above and beyond even his predecessors. The man came equipped with wardrobe, dance moves, voice imitation and a professional production company to splice the video together.

"I was just trying to do something different and have fun with it, also get everybody to vote for me at the same time," said Stephenson, who was beginning to get first returns of feedback by the end of the night. "Everybody is saying it's funny right now. I haven't really looked to see what people are tweeting about, so I'm going to see right now when I go to dinner."

The three Pacers seemed to enjoy it. So much so that George took Hill's phone, searching for coach Frank Vogel to show it to him. The NBA announced Vogel as the Eastern Conference All-Star coach and as much as Stephenson tries to play it down, he would really like to join him in New Orleans.

"I just like to do fun stuff, I'm just happy coach is in there," Stephenson said. "If I was to get in, that's a plus. Just playing hard and we keep winning games, sky's the limit for all of us."
