Referendum Associatieverdrag EU - Oekraine; Hoe kijkt Grygorii Palii daar tegenaan?

Twee-en-een-half jaar geleden ontmoette ik tijdens EuroBasket 2013 een jonge Oekraïense journalist - Grygorii Palii - en sindsdien hebben wij af en toe contact. Op dat moment was de oorlog nog niet uitgebroken, en zou Oekraïne EuroBasket 2015 gaan organiseren...

Aan de vooravond van het Nederlandse Referendum over het Associatieverdrag met Oekraïne, leek het me een goed idee om hem te vragen hoe hij vanuit Oekraïne aankijkt tegen ons referendum. Grygorii studeerde Duits, en kreeg in zijn studie ook wat Nederlandse taal en een en ander over Nederland voorgeschoteld. Inmiddels is hij gemobiliseerd voor het Oekraïense leger...

History moves in a spiral. Something what happens here and now has happened somewhere else a few centuries before.

The desire to break with the huge bloody empire,
the need to defend the right to choose your own outlook and way,
heterogeneous society,
ambitious conductor, often suspected of treason and criticize, 
influential merchant class, which pursues commercial interests,
regions more vulnerable to external aggression, 
intervention of the one of largest armies in the world; refugee flows, cynical violation of all agreements, innocent victims, 
but in the end victory and the establishment of the state, with a new philosophy and the ultimate formation of a new political nation.

If Ukrainian politicians know better the history of the Netherlands, they could avoid a lot of mistakes that have made the history of your country particularly dramatic in the second half of the sixteenth century.

Everything written above is equally suited to describe both periods named 'Tachtigjarige Oorlog' and 'Oekraïense strijd voor onafhankelijkheid', which continues already about 100 years.

We - the Dutch and the Ukrainians - have more in common than it might seem at first glance.
