Finland, Israel, Romania and Turkey Announced As FIBA EuroBasket 2017 Hosts
Finland, Israel, Romania and Turkey were confirmed as the host nations of FIBA EuroBasket 2017 in an announcement ceremony in Munich, Germany on Saturday afternoon.Following on from the unprecedented success of EuroBasket 2015, which for the first time in the history of the competition was hosted by multiple countries, the FIBA Europe Board opted to follow the same path for the 2017 edition of Europe's premier basketball competition.
Turkey will host a Group Phase group, as well as the Final Phase, continuing a proud recent tradition of hosting FIBA basketball competitions, which has in recent years included the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women. Turkey has previously hosted EuroBasket in 1959 and 2001.
Turkey will host both their Group Phase group and the Final Phase in Istanbul in Abdi Ipekci Arena and Sinan Erdem Arena respectively. Sinan Erdem Arena was the scene for the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup Final Round.
Finland last hosted EuroBasket in 1967, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their nation's independence. Helsinki will once more host a Group Phase group, on the occasion of their 100th anniversary.
The announcement was particularly exciting for both Israel and Romania, with 2017 set to mark the first time they will play a role in hosting EuroBasket Group Phase groups in Tel Aviv and Cluj-Napoca respectively. Israel have previously tasted success in the event, taking home the silver medal in 1979. Romania have recent experience in hosting premier basketball events, having been a co-host of EuroBasket Women 2015.
