Ricky Rubio knows how important it is to be part of the Spanish Nationalteam. A lot of countries can compete to win the Gold medal, but for him is clear that they want to give it all for Spain in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

13 Jaar Geleden was Ricky Rubio 15 jaar oud, en zag ik hem voor de tweede keer een Fiba Jeugd EK spelen...en nu... 'Time Flies when You're Having Fun'...
...en trouwens soms nog harder als dat niet het geval is, kan ik inmiddels uit ervaring mededelen...
Zomaar wat gedachten/herinnering naar aanleiding van het boven- en onderstaande FIBA-clipje met Ricky Rubio bij wijze Preview op het WK Basketball 2019 in China over een (kleine) maand:
- 'Ricky' is - ook na 8 jaar NBA en 14 seizoenen als Professional - eigenlijk nog steeds een relatief jonge speler...Super-marketable en een waardevolle PG voor meerdere NBA-teams.
Voor de Jeugd van Vandaag de dag in Nederland, lijkt Rubio wellicht niet zo bijzonder, maar voor mij - en voor iedereen die hem zag spelen - was hij al als 14-jarige een Fenomeen - voor de Spaanse Liefhebbers zelfs al eerder - een van de meest bijzondere spelers ooit op die leeftijd en de jaren erna.
In het artikel hieronder wordt gerefereerd aan misschien wel de meest spectaculaire en enerverende Finale van een Jeugd-EK die ik ooit heb gezien - en ik heb er heel wat gezien! - rond de 3.000 mensen in een kolkende Arena in het kleine Andalucische provinciestadje Linares, en werkelijk iedereen - de Topcoaches naast mij (en elders overal in de zaal), de Scouts en NBA-mensen, de Refs in de zaal en dus ook de Journalisten aan het werk - door het dolle heen...
Overigens was ook zijn directe tegenstander dat - de Georgisch/Russische Babunashvili - in dat Toernooi, maar vooral ook in die Finale met zijn Rusland ook Bijzonder Goed en Spectaculair - anders komt het natuurlijk niet tot 3OT's - maar van hem/hun is later beduidend minder vernomen...
Ik heb die wedstrijd trouwens - na hem live court-side zittend op de middellijn; echt een van de Best Seats in da House! - al zeker een keer of twee, drie, wellicht zelfs (veel) vaker - teruggekeken, en ik kan het iedereen aanraden dat ook (nog) eens te doen...
Mijn verhaal dat ik naar aanleiding van die Finale schreef riep - soms zelfs jaren na datum - reacties op, juist ook van de paar Nederlanders die er ook bij waren...
Toch rezen er onder vele volgers van het Internationale Jeugd Basketball een paar jaar later vraagtekens 'Of hij de NBA wel aan zou kunnen', twijfels die vooral hun wortels hadden in het gebrek aan fysiek; ik heb die twijfels nooit gehad, en heb dat - o.a. in mijn rol van Scout, maar zeker ook als vertolker van het Beleven van het Internationale (Jeugd) Basketball - ook altijd opgeschreven en verteld. "Of hij een Superster - een Francise-speler - zou worden, daar was ik ook niet zeker van, maar dat hij lang een goede en aantrekkelijke speler voor NBA-teams zou kunnen zijn', dat stond bij mij buiten kijf, en die verwachtingen heeft hij inmiddels meer dan waar gemaakt. En bijzonder was, en is, hij ook gebleken; anders dan de Typische NBA-atleet, ietwat kwetsbaar op sommige facetten, maar technisch vaardiger gekoppeld aan een uitblinkend inzicht, dat was en is hij ook.
Wat mij betreft is er nog altijd iets te genieten als je Ricard 'Ricky' Rubio kan zien spelen, Live nog meer trouwens dan op TV...
En nog altijd - ook na een carriére van 15 jaar als professional - is Rubio nog steeds maar 28 jaar jong...bij de meeste spelers geldt dat ze dan pas hun top bereiken! Het internet puilt uit van bijzondere content over Rubio; je kunt - Dit - als ingang gebruiken als je benieuwd bent.
'Time Flies, when You're Having Fun'...en zoals ik al aan het begin opschreef, de tijd vervliegt - tenminste op mijn leeftijd - soms nog veel sneller als je geen tijd kunt steken in Leuke Basketball-belevenissen zoals toen; het lijkt nog maar zo kort geleden, en toch blijkt het al 14 jaar geleden...
Er zullen altijd weer nieuwe Bijzonder Spelers opstaan, maar Ricky...die was toen wel uitzonderlijk Bijzonder; ik zal het nooit vergeten!

Ricky Rubio wants to see a different kind of movie in China this September
MADRID (Spain) - Since entering the Spanish national team, Ricky Rubio has claimed multiple Olympic and FIBA EuroBasket medals, but he is yet to climb the podium at a FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Spain won the event in 2006, but Rubio was busy putting up 51 points, 24 rebounds, 12 assists and 7 steals in the Final of the FIBA U16 European Championship that summer(full game). Dominant in his age group would be an understatement, it was obvious that Rubio will soon make headlines with the senior national team.
It happened in 2008, when he made his debut at the Beijing Olympics, playing 29 minutes in the Final against USA. The point guard went on to win the FIBA EuroBasket twice, secured two more bronze medals at the same level, and was part of the Spanish team which finished third in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
But, in 2010 and 2014 he could not help Spain win a medal at the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Fast forward to 2019, and Rubio is keen to right the wrong and challenge for the top step of the podium.
"I see a lot of teams (in the medal hunt). It used to be the US team and one of the other generations, like Spain or Argentina, who can play toe-to-toe with them. Now we have a lot of countries who can compete. Not just to play in the Final. But also to beat USA. Spain, of course, but also France, Australia...a lot of good teams out there who can compete and win the gold medal," Rubio said, ready for his third go at the world summit.
"It was like watching a movie. We would know that in the end US will win. Lately, it seems that the movie has changed in the ending. Now we have a deeper show, and you don't know what to expect in the end. Anything can happen."
For the first time since 1999, Spain will be without either one of the iconic trio of Pau Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro and Sergio Rodriguez, and both Nikola Mirotic and Serge Ibaka are also out for the summer. Rubio had no doubts about joining the team, emphasizing once again how much the national team means to him.
"Putting the jersey on with the national team, playing along with Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro, Rudy Fernandez, it was like, 'I made it!' I'm one of the 12 best players in my country. And I'm not just playing for 'Rubio,' for me or my family, I'm playing for the whole country that's watching us and cheering for us. I remember watching the World Cup and the Olympic Games as a kid, and saying 'Spain are playing. We are playing.' When you are playing for the national team, it's not just the 12 guys playing. It's 'we' playing. The whole country," the 28-year-old Phoenix Suns point guard explained.
Rubio and Spain will play the first part of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in Guangzhou, against Iran, Puerto Rico and Tunisia in Group C. If they finish in the top two of the group, they will move to Wuhan, to take on the top two of Group D, where Serbia, Italy, Angola and Philippines are set to battle it out on the court.
