Donar Groningen was het Nederlandse Clubteam dat de kans kreeg zich in de nieuwe Fiba Champions League te spelen middels twee ronden 'Play In'. Met twee tegenstanders uit Estland -Tartu in de Eerste Ronde- en (eventueel Denemarken -Bakken Bears- geen onmogelijke opgave, zo leek het van te voren. Maar in het tegenwoordige Internationale Basketball moet je -zeker in een Knock-out-fase- iedere wedstrijd goed zijn, en Donar bleek al in de Eerste Ronde niet goed, en zeker niet constant goed genoeg; een grote voorsprong in eigen hal vervloog en die pot werd een gelijkspelletje, en dan weet je dat het uit lastig wordt...het lukte dan ook niet. Maar weinigen -zeker in Nederland- zullen hebben verwacht dat het vervolgens het Deens Bakken Bears wel lukte om te winnen van de Oost-Esten uit de Universiteitsstad Tartu. Bakken Bears in de Groepsfase van de Fiba Europe Champions League dus. En; slechts een Nederlands Mannen Clubteam in de Europese Cup-toernooien op het laagste (vierde, als je tenminste telt 1. EL, 2. EuroCup, 3. Fiba BCL en 4. Fiba EuroCup...) niveau, want verder heeft geen enkel Mannenteam zich aangemeld, en dat is heel erg jammer..!

Basketball Champions League: Regular Season field complete

MIES, Switzerland (Basketball Champions League) – The Basketball Champions League (BCL) qualification rounds just ended and the exciting prospect of taking part in the Regular Season became a reality for four additional teams who will be joining the inaugural edition of the competition.

Kataja Basket, KK Mornar Bar, Juventus Utena and Openjobmetis Varese were the first four teams that emerged triumphant and made their way to the Basketball Champions League Regular Season. On Thursday night, they were joined by CSM Oradea, Ironi Nahariya, Bakken Bears and Usak Sportif who won the remaining four tickets and advanced to the group stage of the Regular Season.

40 participating teams, coming from 23 different European countries (including 9 current and 19 former national champions) will take part of the inaugural season of the Basketball Champions League. The groups are distributed as such:

Regular Season
Group A: Banvit (TUR); Fraport Skyliners (GER); Aris BSA-2003 (GRE); ČEZ Basketball Nymburk (CZE); Helios Suns Domžale (SLO); AS Monaco Basket (FRA); Bakken Bears (DEN); Ironi Nahariya (ISR).

Group B: Pinar Karsiyaka (TUR); Umana Reyer Venezia (ITA); Avtodor Saratov (RUS); Maccabi Rand Media Rishon Lezion (ISR); Khimik (UKR); Le Mans (FRA); Kataja Basket (FIN); CSM CSU Oradea (ROU).

Group C: ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne (FRA); EWE Baskets Oldenburg (GER); PAOK (GRE); Neptunas Klaipeda (LTU); Rosa Radom (POL); Ventspils (LAT); Muratbey Usak Sportif (TUR); Openjobmetis Varese (ITA).

Group D: SIG Strasbourg (FRA); Sidigas Avellino (ITA); Iberostar Tenerife (ESP); Telenet Oostende (BEL); Cibona (CRO); Mega Leks (SRB); KK Mornar (MNE); Juventus Utena (LTU).

Group E: Besiktas Sompo Japan (TUR), MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg (GER), Szolnoki Olaj (HUN), Dinamo Sassari (ITA), Stelmet Zielona Gora (POL), AEK (GRE), Partizan (SER), Proximus Spirou (BEL).

The Regular Season consists of five (5) groups of eight (8) teams each, with games played home and away in a round robin system. The four (4) best ranked teams from each group will advance to the Play-offs, together with the four (4) best ranked 5th placed teams. The next top eight (8) placed teams will join the FIBA Europe Cup. The action will tip off on 18 October.

Four more BCL teams join FIBA Europe Cup

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) – Four more clubs transferred to the FIBA Europe Cup following the completion of the Basketball Champions League (BCL) Qualification Round on Thursday evening.

The continental aspirations of the teams who fell just one step short of the BCL Regular Season will shift over to the FIBA Europe Cup, as they joined 34 other European clubs in the Regular Season of the competition.

Three of the teams, Tsmoki-Minsk (BLR), Lukoil Academic (BUL) and BC Tartu (EST), took part in the inaugural edition of the FIBA Europe Cup last season, reaching the Round of 32.

Meanwhile, U-BT Cluj Napoca (ROU) will get their first taste of the FIBA Europe Cup this season as they prepare for their debut.

This is already the second group of BCL sides that have transferred to the FIBA Europe Cup.

SL Benfica (POR), Donar Groningen (NED), Sodertalje Kings (SWE), FC Porto (POR), Petrolina AEK (CYP), Rilski Sportist (BUL), KK Igokea (BIH) and Prievidza (SVK) merged into the FIBA Europe Cup ranks after the first stage of the BCL Qualification Round.

The new FIBA Europe Cup season will commence on Tuesday, 18 October 2016.


En Donar is terechtgekomen in Groep-B, en speelt daar tegen het Hongaarse Kormend, het Belgische Limburg United en het Franse Gravelines. Niet te ver weg, niet te goed, en niet te slecht; dus in ieder geval nog drie leuke Europese wedstrijden in Martini Plazza...
